Analytics without the personal trail

A useful analytics system can show the shape of an audience without trying to recognize anyone in it.

The short version

Good analytics should help a team make a better decision. They do not need to turn every visit into a dossier to do that.

The useful questions are usually aggregate questions: which pages are helping, where people arrive from, which campaigns are working, and what changes over time. None of those questions require a persistent identity attached to a person.
